Ballroom culture started in New York in the 60’s, It is a safe space that was especially made for and by those who felt unsafe and discriminated against in “the outside world” - in particular Black and Latin trans women who were the pioneers and founders of this culture.
Ballroom is an underground scene where LGBTQ POC youth and adults are able to express themselves freely and compete for trophies and cash prizes. It has evolved and expanded over the years. These days ballroom is becoming more and more popular in mainstream and has spread to many different places around the globe, all the way to our little country.
